I Cannot Ask AnyoneProverbs 17:9

He Would Help And He Would Also Comment

This message is for the reader whose only available helper cannot help without remarking on it, and who has chosen the mess over the remark for years

There is a man in your life who would come tomorrow if you asked him.

He has a van. He is capable. He would take a day off work and he would not want paying and he would work harder than you would.

And he would talk about it.

Not cruelly. Probably not even to your face, most of it. But there would be remarks while he worked. There would be a story about it later at somebody's table, told with affection, in a way that makes it a funny thing about you. And in two years, when something else happens, it would come up again.

So you have not asked him. For four years you have not asked him, and you have carried the whole of it alone, and every so often somebody says why do you not just ask him, he would come like a shot.

And the answer, which you have never said out loud, is that the cost of his help is higher than the cost of the mess, and you have run those numbers many times and they come out the same way every time.

He that covereth a transgression seeketh love

There is a line in Proverbs about what people do with what they know.

He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends. (Proverbs 17:9, King James Version)

He that repeateth a matter separateth very friends.

Now that is a description of exactly the thing being protected against in this house, and Scripture treats it as serious. It does not say repeating a matter is a small social flaw. It says it separates friends who were close.

You have been reading a real dynamic correctly, and Proverbs 17:9 has never once treated the repeating of a matter as a small thing. The Spirit of God is the one who gives a person permission to notice who covers and who repeats, and the written word says it separates friends who were close.

So your instinct is not paranoia and it is not pride. It is a correct reading of a real dynamic that the book of Proverbs identified thousands of years ago.

And notice the other half of the verse, because it is the part that matters for tonight. He that covereth a transgression seeketh love. There are people who cover. Not people who never notice, and not people who pretend. People who see a thing and do not repeat it, deliberately, because they want the friendship more than they want the story.

Those people exist. Proverbs says so, and it treats them as a recognized category.

You are not being difficult, and Proverbs 17:9 has never once dismissed the difference between somebody who covers and somebody who repeats. It is written that repeating a matter separates close friends, which makes your instinct a reading of Scripture rather than a fault in you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gives a person permission to notice who is who.

You have been protecting a friendship by not putting it in the hands of a man who repeats. The word puts covering and repeating in the same verse as two different things people do, and the Spirit of God is the one who helps somebody tell them apart.

He is not the only person

Now here is the thing I actually want to say, and it is the whole article.

He has been treated as the only option in this house for years.

Not because anybody decided that. Because he is the obvious one. He has the van, he has the time, he is family or near enough, and when the mind runs the question who could help, he arrives first and loudest and then the mind stops running.

You have more than one name available tonight, and the loudest one has never once been the only one. It is written that there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother, which is a category and not a single person, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings up a name the mind did not offer first.

But the question tonight is not who could carry furniture. The question is who could be told.

And that is a completely different list, and there is almost always somebody on it. The quiet one. The one who has been through something. The person from church who never says much. The friend who has never repeated anything about anybody in twenty years, which is knowable because it has been watched. A house is a record of what a hard stretch cost, and it is not a verdict on the person who lives there.

That person cannot lift a dresser and does not need to. Tonight nobody is lifting anything.

You were never out of options, and there has never once been only one person in your life capable of hearing one sentence. Proverbs 17:9 names two kinds of people and lets a person choose, and the Spirit of God is the one who brings a name to mind that was never at the top of the list.

You are permitted to choose who knows this, and choosing has never once been disloyalty to anybody. It is written that the one who covers is seeking love, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present when a person deliberately picks somebody safe.

Text one person, and not him

So here is the whole of what I am asking.

You are choosing who knows this tonight, and choosing has never once been disloyalty to the person you did not choose. The Spirit of God is the one who is present when somebody deliberately picks safety, and Proverbs 17:9 sets the covering and the repeating side by side without hatred toward either.

Think of somebody who covers. Not somebody who would help. Somebody who does not repeat.

Send them: the house is bad and I am working on it.

Not him. Deliberately not him. That is not a judgment on him as a man and you do not have to think badly of him to leave him off this.

Then put the phone down and clean nothing.

You are able to choose tonight, and choosing has never once required you to think less of the person you did not choose. Proverbs 17:9 sets the two side by side without hatred toward either, and the Spirit of God is present in a message sent to somebody the mind had not offered first.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out tonight over somebody who has one loud helper and no confidant.

You are not too proud to be helped, and four years of not asking a man who tells stories has never once been a fact about your pride. I am not promising you a helper and I am not promising you a clean house. Proverbs 17:9 names the repeating of a matter as a thing that separates close friends, and it is the Holy Spirit, not my saying so, who takes that and stands it between you and the voice that has been calling you stubborn.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have somebody in your life who covers, and that person has never once been the first name your mind offers you. The written word says he that covereth a transgression seeketh love, and the Spirit of God is the one who brings the right name up at nine in the evening.

Choose. Send it. Then put the phone down.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Man who cannot help without commenting, I am not telling you tonight, and choosing somebody else is not disloyalty. Proverbs 17:9 says he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends, so by the Holy Spirit I choose who knows in the name of Jesus.
  2. Guilt about knowing what I know, you are not in this text. The written word names the covering and the repeating as two different things people do, and by the Holy Spirit I am finished apologizing for being able to tell them apart.
  3. Lord, You are the one who put both kinds of person into one verse without hatred. Your word says he that covereth a transgression seeketh love, so by Your Spirit I send one message tonight to somebody who covers, and I put the phone down, and I stop.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
