I Cleaned One CornerMatthew 6:4

I Cleaned It And Nobody Noticed

This message is for the reader who did real work in a house full of people and had it pass entirely unremarked, and has quietly concluded it did not happen

You did the shelf.

Or the counter, or the top of the chest, or the four feet of floor by the door. You did it on Tuesday, in the twenty minutes you had, and it was a real piece of work and it cost you something to do it.

And four people walked past it.

Not one of them said a word. Not because they are unkind. Because a cleared shelf does not announce itself. Mess announces itself constantly, and cleared space is silent, and human eyes go to what is loud.

So they walked past. And you noticed them not noticing, which is a particular kind of quiet pain, and you did not say anything either, because saying look what I did about a shelf feels ridiculous.

And here is what happened next, and it is why I am writing this. Something in you filed it as not having happened. Not consciously. But the shelf stopped being a thing you did and became a plain fact about the kitchen, and the doing of it disappeared.

Thy Father which seeth in secret

There is a passage in Matthew about doing things where nobody is watching.

That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly. (Matthew 6:4, King James Version)

Now, this is usually taught as an instruction about not showing off, and it is that. But sit inside the sentence for a second, because there is something else in it.

Thy Father which seeth in secret.

That is a description of God's actual attention. Not that He will find out later. Not that He reviews things at the end. He sees in secret, present tense, as it happens, in the room.

You are being seen while it happens and not reviewed afterward, and Matthew 6:4 has never once described a God who finds out later. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes present tense mean present tense at eleven o'clock at night, and the written word puts the seeing inside the secret itself.

Which means at eleven o'clock on Tuesday, with four things coming off a shelf and a cloth in one hand, in a house where everybody else was asleep or watching something, that was seen. Not recorded. Seen.

And there is nothing in that verse about the size of the thing being done.

You are not doing invisible work, and Matthew 6:4 has never once made God's noticing depend on anybody else's. It is written that the Father sees in secret as a present and ongoing fact, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that concrete rather than sentimental for somebody standing in a kitchen at eleven at night.

You have been the only person in this house who knows what that shelf cost, and never once has that been the full count of who knew. The word puts God's attention inside the unseen thing itself, and the Spirit of God is the one who is in a room where a small job is being done quietly.

The house cannot thank you and it was never going to

Now I want to say the practical thing, because I do not want you waiting for something that is not coming.

The people you live with are not going to notice. Not this time and probably not next time.

That is not a character flaw in them. It is how attention works. Nobody in the history of the world has walked into a room and thought, that surface is clear, somebody must have done that. Clear is the absence of a thing, and absences do not catch an eye.

You have been waiting on an audience that was never going to notice, and clear space has never once been the kind of thing an eye goes to. The Spirit of God is the one who frees a person from waiting for a thank you, and it is written that the Father seeth in secret and rewards from there.

So if the plan involves being seen by the household, the plan will fail every time, and you will do good work and be quietly disappointed by good people about four hundred more times.

I want to take the household out of it entirely.

You were never working for an audience that was going to arrive, and there has never once been a version of housework that gets applauded by the people living inside it. Matthew 6:4 puts the reward outside the room the work happens in, and the Spirit of God is the one who frees a person from waiting for a thank you that is not coming.

So tonight, the noticing is yours to do.

You are permitted to go and look at your own work, and looking at it has never once been vanity. It is written that the Father sees in secret, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a person able to see what they themselves did.

Go and look at it

So here is the whole of what I am asking, and it takes about a minute.

Go and stand in front of the thing you cleared. The shelf. The counter. The four feet of floor.

Look at it. Not at the rest of the room. At the thing.

Say, out loud if you can, I did that.

Then go and sit down. Do not clean anything else tonight.

You are able to see your own work tonight, and seeing it has never once required somebody else to see it first. Matthew 6:4 has the Father seeing in secret, and the Spirit of God is present in front of one cleared shelf with nobody else in the room.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out tonight over somebody whose work keeps disappearing.

You are not doing nothing, and four people walking past a cleared shelf without a word has never once been evidence that the shelf was not cleared. I am not promising you that anybody notices and I am not promising you a clean house. Matthew 6:4 makes God's seeing a present fact inside the unseen thing itself, and it is the Holy Spirit, not my saying so, who takes that and stands it between you and the voice that has been telling you that nothing you do makes any difference.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have a witness in this house tonight, and there has never once been a small job in it that went unseen. The written word says thy Father which seeth in secret, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that true in a kitchen at eleven at night with everybody else asleep.

Go and look at what you did. Then sit down.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Work nobody mentioned, I am looking at you tonight, and being unnoticed is not the same as not counting. Matthew 6:4 says thy Father which seeth in secret, so by the Holy Spirit I go and stand in front of it in the name of Jesus.
  2. Silence in this house, you were never a verdict. The written word puts God's seeing inside the unseen thing itself, and by the Holy Spirit I am finished waiting on a thank you that never once arrived from anybody living here.
  3. Father, You are the one who sees in secret and does not need to be told. Your word says the reward comes from the seeing and not from the audience, so by Your Spirit I go and look at what I did tonight, and I clean nothing more, and I sit down.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
