I Cannot Ask AnyoneLuke 5:19

She Offered Twice And I Said No

This message is for the reader who has refused real offers of help more than once and is now afraid the offers have stopped coming for good

She offered twice.

Once in the spring, properly, with a day suggested. And once again later, more lightly, in a way that gave you an easy exit, which she did on purpose because she had seen what happened the first time.

And you said no both times, and you said it fast, and you have thought about it since.

Because she has not offered again. And you do not know whether that is because she took the hint, which would be reasonable, or because she assumed you were fine, which would be worse, or because something in the friendship has quietly shifted, which is the one you think about at night.

I want to say something about that first no, because I think you have been unfair to yourself about it.

You did not refuse her. You refused the picture that came into your head when she said it, which was her standing in your hall, seeing everything, and the two of you having to have a conversation about it. That picture arrived in about a second and it was unbearable, and the no came out of your mouth attached to the picture rather than to her.

They let him down through the roof

There is a story in Luke about four men and a hole in a roof.

And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus. (Luke 5:19, King James Version)

Now here is what I want you to notice about the man on the bed.

He does not speak. Not once in the whole account. He does not ask them to carry him, he does not thank them, he does not say anything at all until much later and in some tellings not at all.

You have never once been required to organize your own rescue, and no man on that bed contributed anything anybody could measure. Luke 5:19 has the friends decide and carry and climb and dig, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets somebody be carried without earning it first.

The friends do the entire thing. They decide, they carry, they climb, they dig through somebody's roof, and they lower him into a room full of people he cannot get away from.

And Scripture says something extraordinary about it. It says Jesus saw their faith. Theirs. The friends'. The man on the bed contributed nothing anybody could measure.

You are not required to organize your own help, and Luke 5:19 has never once made the one being carried do the work. It is written that He saw their faith, which puts the whole initiative on the friends, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets somebody be carried without earning it first.

You have been trying to be well enough to accept help. The word has a man lowered through a roof without saying a word, and the Spirit of God is the one who honors the friends who came anyway.

Saying yes late is not too late

Now the practical fear, which is that it is too late.

I do not think it is, and here is why.

People do not withdraw offers because the offer was refused. They stop offering because they do not want to press, which is a courtesy and not a withdrawal. Almost everybody who has offered twice would still come. They are waiting for a signal, and the signal they are waiting for is not an apology or an explanation, it is a message from you that says something has changed.

And here is the thing about the four men on the roof. They did not knock politely and leave when the house was full. They went up and started digging. That is what people who actually want to help are like. The obstacle did not put them off, and the obstacle in your case is one no in a spring three seasons ago.

You were never turning away a friend, and there has never once been a version of that no that was addressed to her. Luke 5:19 has friends who go through a roof rather than take an obstacle as an answer, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps a door open longer than a person believes it stayed open.

So tonight is one message. Not an invitation, not a plan, not an apology.

You are permitted to send one plain sentence tonight, and one sentence has never once obligated you to a visit. It is written that they got him in by the only route available, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present when somebody sends a message they have not been able to send for a year.

Text one person

So here is the whole of what I am asking, and it is a text message.

Pick the person who offered. Send them something like this: the house is bad and I am working on it.

That is the whole message. Two clauses. Do not explain it. Do not give the year. Do not apologize for the two noes. Do not invite her.

You are telling one person one true thing tonight, and it has never once been the same as asking anybody for anything. The Holy Spirit is the one who is present in a message that took forty seconds to type and a year to reach, and it is written that they got him in by the only route available.

Nothing is being asked for. One person is being told one true thing, and that is the entire task. A house is a record of what a hard stretch cost, and it is not a verdict on the man living in it.

Then put the phone down and clean nothing.

You are able to send one true sentence tonight, and sending it has never once required you to ask for anything. Luke 5:19 has a man carried in without a word from him, and the Spirit of God is present in a text message that took forty seconds to type and a year to reach.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out tonight over somebody who said no and has regretted it since.

You are not somebody who pushes people away, and two refusals attached to a picture in your head has never once been a fact about how you feel about her. I am not promising you that she comes and I am not promising you a clean house. Luke 5:19 puts the whole initiative on the friends and asks nothing at all of the man being carried, and it is the Holy Spirit, not my saying so, who takes that and stands it between you and the voice that has been telling you that you have burned it.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have one sentence available tonight, and no amount of time has ever once made a plain true sentence too late to send. The written word has four men going through a roof rather than accepting an obstacle, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that ordinary at eleven at night with a phone in your hand.

Send the message. Then put the phone down.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Offers I turned down, I am sending one text tonight, and saying yes late is not too late. Luke 5:19 has friends who dug through a roof rather than take an obstacle as an answer, so by the Holy Spirit I send it in the name of Jesus.
  2. Picture that arrived when she asked, you were never her. The written word puts the whole initiative on the friends and asks nothing of the man on the bed, and by the Holy Spirit I am finished answering a picture instead of a person.
  3. Lord, You are the one who saw their faith and not his. Your word has him lowered in without a single word from his own mouth, so by Your Spirit I send one sentence tonight, and I ask for nothing, and I put the phone down.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
