I Cannot Ask AnyoneRomans 8:1

If They Saw This They Would See Everything

This message is for the reader who believes one look at the house would revise everything anybody has ever thought about them

Here is the thought, and I want to say it back to you accurately because I think saying it accurately is most of the work.

If they saw this, everything else would be revised.

Not: they would think the house is bad. That would be fine, because the house is bad and you know it. The fear is much larger than that. The fear is that this one room would rewrite you in their mind. That every good thing they have ever thought about you would be reconsidered in the light of it. That the version of you they know would turn out to have been a mistake, and this would be the correction.

That is a very specific fear and it is not a small one, and it is why one text message has been impossible for years while much harder things in your life have not been.

I want to look at whether it is true.

There is therefore now no condemnation

There is a sentence at the start of Romans eight that lands on exactly this.

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. (Romans 8:1, King James Version)

No condemnation. Now.

The word condemnation is a legal word and it means a verdict handed down. And the sentence removes it entirely, in the present tense, for people who are in Christ.

Now here is why that matters for a text message. The fear in question is a fear of a verdict. Not of an opinion, not of embarrassment. A verdict. A judgment that gets passed and then stands and changes a person's standing permanently.

And the verse says there is not one. Not that it is deserved and waived. That there is none.

Which means the thing you have been protecting yourself from at the highest level has already been dealt with, and what remains is much smaller and much more human, which is that a friend might feel a bit sorry for you for an afternoon.

You are not standing under a verdict, and Romans 8:1 has never once left one in place to be discovered. It is written as no condemnation, now, in the present, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a fact about a hallway rather than a doctrine on a page.

You have been protecting yourself against a judgment that has already been removed. The word takes the verdict out entirely, and the Spirit of God is the one who tells a person there is nothing left to be sentenced by.

People do not revise you, they add

Now the practical piece, and it is about how people actually hold information about each other.

The picture in your head is a replacement. She has a version of you, and this new fact would overwrite it, and afterward there would only be the new version.

That is not what happens. People do not replace, they add. She would keep what she already has, which is twenty years, plus one new fact about a house.

You have been picturing a replacement, and no new fact has ever once overwritten what somebody already knows about a person. Romans 8:1 removes the verdict entirely and in the present tense, and the Spirit of God is the one who shrinks an imagined rewrite back to the size of a sentence.

And a new fact landing next to twenty years of evidence gets interpreted by the twenty years. She would not conclude that somebody else had arrived. She would think: she has been having a harder time than she said.

And here is the piece that is worth sitting with. That thought, the one she would actually have, is closer to the truth than the picture she has now. So telling her does not damage her understanding of you. It corrects it in your favor.

You were never one fact away from being reconsidered, and there has never once been a friendship in which twenty years is overwritten by one afternoon. Romans 8:1 removes the verdict entirely, and the Spirit of God is the one who shrinks an imagined revision back to the size of a fact.

So tonight is one sentence, and it will not be the sentence that undoes you, because there is not one.

You are handing over a fact and not a confession tonight, and no true sentence has ever once cost somebody a friendship that had twenty years under it. It is written that there is now no condemnation, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present when a person says a plain thing to somebody who has known them a long time.

Text one person

So here is the whole of what I am asking.

You are correcting a picture rather than damaging one tonight, and the truth has never once left somebody worse understood than the guess did. It is written that there is therefore now no condemnation, with nothing pending, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a fact about a hallway.

Pick somebody who has known you a long time. The long acquaintance is the point, because it is the twenty years that will interpret the fact.

Send them: the house is bad and I am working on it.

Do not explain what caused it. Do not manage their reaction in advance. Do not say and I know how that sounds.

Then put the phone down and clean nothing.

You are able to add one true fact to what somebody already knows tonight, and adding it has never once erased anything. Romans 8:1 puts the condemnation at zero in the present tense, and the Spirit of God is present in a message sent to somebody who has known you for twenty years.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out tonight over somebody afraid of being revised.

You are not one room away from losing what people think of you, and six years of holding a picture together has never once been necessary. I am not promising you a good reaction and I am not promising you a clean house. Romans 8:1 says there is now no condemnation and puts it in the present tense with nothing pending, and it is the Holy Spirit, not my saying so, who takes that and stands it between you and the voice that has been telling you that one look would explain you.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have twenty years standing beside one fact tonight, and there has never once been a fact with the power to overwrite twenty years. The written word says there is therefore now no condemnation, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that plain at the end of a Friday with a phone in your hand.

Send it. Then put the phone down.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Fear that one room explains all of me, I am sending one text tonight, and a house has never once been a summary of a person. Romans 8:1 says there is now no condemnation, so by the Holy Spirit I send it in the name of Jesus.
  2. Picture I have been holding together, you were never mine to maintain. The written word removes the verdict entirely and in the present tense, and by the Holy Spirit I am finished defending a version of me against one true fact.
  3. Lord, You are the one who left no condemnation standing anywhere. Your word says it now, in the present, with nothing pending, so by Your Spirit I tell one person tonight, and I explain nothing, and I put the phone down.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
