I Cleaned One CornerProverbs 24:16

It Was Full Again In Two Days

This message is for the reader whose cleared surface refilled almost immediately, and who has taken that as proof that clearing anything is pointless

You cleared the table on Sunday.

By Wednesday there was a bag on it, and by Friday there were four things, and by the following Sunday you could not have told anybody it had ever been clear.

And somewhere in that week, a sentence formed. What is the point.

I want to take that sentence seriously, because it is not laziness talking. It is a person doing arithmetic. If a thing you did on Sunday is gone by Friday, then the doing of it was, in some real sense, reversed, and doing it again looks like agreeing to be a person who does the same job forever.

That is the thought I want to work on. Not whether to clear the table. Whether doing something twice means you failed at it the first time.

A just man falleth seven times

There is a line in Proverbs that people quote and then misread by one word.

For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief. (Proverbs 24:16, King James Version)

Everybody remembers the rising. Look at the falling.

Seven times. It is not one fall and one heroic recovery. It is a pattern, described plainly, as the ordinary experience of a just man. The text does not treat the seventh fall as worse than the first. It never suggests he ought to have learned by the fourth.

You are looking at a surface behaving exactly as surfaces behave, and no table on this street has ever once stayed clear without somebody clearing it. Proverbs 24:16 records the rising and leaves the count alone, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes the verdict off an ordinary repeated job.

And the word just there is the point. This is what a good man's life looks like from the inside. Not a straight line. A repetition, with rising in it.

Nobody in that verse is criticized for the number.

You are not failing because it went back, and Proverbs 24:16 has never once counted the falls against the man. It is written that a just man falls seven times and rises, which makes repetition the normal shape of a good life, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes the shame out of doing a thing again.

You have been treating the second time as evidence against the first. The word puts seven falls inside the description of a just man, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps a rising from being canceled by what came after it.

Surfaces are not projects, they are places

Now let me say the practical thing, because there is a real misunderstanding underneath this and clearing it up helps enormously.

That table has been treated as a project. A project gets finished. If a project comes apart, the project failed. A table is a record of a household putting things down, and it is not a verdict on the person who lives there.

A table is not a project. It is a place where a household puts things down. It will fill. It filled last year and the year before, and it fills in houses where nothing has ever gone wrong, and in those houses somebody clears it and nobody in the family calls that a failure or even notices it as an event.

You have been grading a place as though it were a project, and no surface in any house on this street has ever once stayed clear on its own. The Holy Spirit is the one who separates a repeated job from a repeated failure, and it is written that the just man riseth up again with no reference at all to how often.

The difference between your table and theirs is not that theirs stays clear. It is that they clear it without a verdict attached.

That is the whole of it. They do the same work you do. They do not stand over it afterward asking what it means about them.

You were never losing ground, and a surface refilling has never once been a report on the person who cleared it. Proverbs 24:16 counts seven falls without a word of criticism, and the Spirit of God is the one who separates a repeated job from a repeated failure.

So tonight is not clearing the table again. Tonight is smaller than that.

You are permitted to look at a surface that has gone back and count the clearing anyway, and counting it has never once been self deception. It is written that the man rises up again with no reference at all to how many times, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present in a job that is going to need doing again.

Go and look at it

So here is the whole of it, and it is a minute of your evening.

Go and stand where you cleared it. Look at it as it is now, with the bag and the four things and whatever else.

You are refusing to hand a verdict to a piece of furniture tonight, and no table anywhere has ever once been qualified to give one. Proverbs 24:16 keeps the count out of the account entirely, and the Spirit of God is the one who is present in front of a surface that has gone back.

Say, out loud: I cleared this once. I can clear it again. Neither of those is a failure.

Then leave it. Do not clear it tonight. That is important, and it is the part people skip.

Tonight the work is the sentence, not the surface.

You are able to say something true about your own work tonight, and saying it has never once required the surface to be clear. Proverbs 24:16 puts the rising in the record and leaves the count alone, and the Spirit of God is present in front of a table that has gone back.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out tonight over somebody watching a surface fill up again.

You are not going backward, and thirty clearings in two years has never once been thirty failures. I am not promising you a table that stays clear and I am not promising you a house that holds. Proverbs 24:16 puts seven falls inside the description of a just man without one word against him, and it is the Holy Spirit, not my saying so, who takes that and stands it between you and the voice that has been asking what the point is.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have permission to do the same small job for the rest of your life, and doing it again has never once meant that the last time did not count. The written word says the just man riseth up again and never counts it against him, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that ordinary in a kitchen at nine in the evening.

Go and look. Say it. Then leave it.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Surface that filled again, I am clearing you a second time tonight, and having to do it twice is not failing at it once. Proverbs 24:16 says a just man falleth seven times and riseth up again, so by the Holy Spirit I count the first time in the name of Jesus.
  2. Question about what the point is, you are not in this text. The written word records seven falls without one word against the man, and by the Holy Spirit I am finished paying a tax every time an ordinary surface behaves like one.
  3. Father, You are the one who put the rising in the record and left the count alone. Your word calls him just while he is falling, so by Your Spirit I look at that table tonight, and I clear nothing, and I let the first time stand.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
