The Ledger In My Head

This message is for the reader keeping a private running account of the house that records every failure and has never once credited anything they did

There is an account being kept in your head and it has been running for years.

It does not have a name and you have never written any of it down, but you could produce the balance instantly if somebody asked. Every failed attempt is in there. Every week you meant to and did not. The Saturday you wasted. The room you started and abandoned in March.

And here is the thing about that account that I want to put in front of you tonight.

It has a debit column and no credit column.

Everything that goes wrong is entered. Nothing that goes right is. You cleared a shelf in April and it is not in the ledger. You did the hall in June and it is not in there either. The account only ever moves in one direction, and it has been moving in that direction for a very long time, and the balance is enormous.

That is not an account. An account with only one column is not an account, it is a case being built.

A book of remembrance was written

There is a small verse in Malachi that describes God keeping records, and what He records is not what people expect.

Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name. (Malachi 3:16, King James Version)

A book of remembrance was written before him.

Now look at what is in that book. It is a record of people talking to each other. That is all. Ordinary conversation between people who were trying to hold on to something in a bad time.

You are already written into a record that keeps the opposite things, and no ledger of yours has ever once been the only account of this house. Malachi 3:16 has a book of remembrance holding ordinary faithful speech, and the Spirit of God is the one who has been keeping it while somebody else kept the debits.

And it gets written down. Not their failures. Not the long list of what the nation had done wrong, which is most of the rest of that book. Their small, ordinary, faithful speech.

So there is a record being kept, and it is keeping the opposite things from the one in your head.

You are not the only one keeping an account, and Malachi 3:16 has never once described the divine record as a list of failures. It is written that a book of remembrance holds ordinary conversation between people who were holding on, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that specific rather than sentimental for somebody carrying a debit column.

You have been keeping the exact inverse of the book God keeps. The word records the small things that were done rather than the many that were not, and the Spirit of God is the one who has been writing a different account of this house the whole time.

An account you cannot audit is not an account

Now the practical piece, and it is about how that ledger works.

You cannot check it. That is the first thing. There is no page to look at. The balance is produced from memory, at speed, usually late at night, by a part of you that is tired.

You cannot query it. If you tried to say, hang on, I did do the shelf in April, there is no clerk to say that to. The account returns the same balance regardless.

You have never once been held to account by anything real, and no balance produced from memory at midnight has ever been a set of accounts. The Holy Spirit is the one who replaces a phantom figure with an actual record, and it is written that the Lord hearkened and heard and wrote it down before Him.

And you cannot pay it off. There is no amount of clearing that closes it, because the credits do not get entered.

An account with no page, no clerk, and no credit column is not keeping records. It is producing a feeling and calling it arithmetic. A house is a record of what a hard stretch cost, and it is not a verdict on the man who lives in it.

You were never being held to account, and there has never once been an account there capable of being settled. Malachi 3:16 has a real book with real entries in it kept by somebody who hearkened and heard, and the Spirit of God is the one who replaces a phantom balance with an actual record.

So tonight is not entering anything. It is looking at one thing that never got entered.

You are permitted to look at your own work without putting it anywhere, and leaving it unentered has never once made it not have happened. It is written that the book was written before Him and not before them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a record a person does not have to maintain.

Go and look at it and enter it nowhere

So here is the whole of it.

Go and stand in front of something you did in this house. The shelf, the hall, the corner, whichever one comes to mind.

Look at it and say out loud: this is not in my ledger, and it happened anyway.

Do not add it to anything. Do not start a list. That is the point. The exercise is a thing that exists outside the accounting entirely.

Then go and sit down and clean nothing.

You are able to hold one piece of work outside of any account tonight, and holding it there has never once been the same as forgetting it. Malachi 3:16 puts the keeping on God's side of the table, and the Spirit of God is present in a small piece of work that nobody has written down.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out tonight over somebody carrying a balance.

You are not in debt to this house, and nine years of a one sided account has never once been a true statement of what you have done here. I am not promising you a clean house and I am not promising you the ledger stops running. Malachi 3:16 shows a record kept by God that holds the small faithful things rather than the failures, and it is the Holy Spirit, not my saying so, who takes that and stands it between you and the voice that has been reading you a balance every night of your life.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have been in a book of remembrance the whole time, and there has never once been a night when the only account of this house was the one in your head. The written word says a book of remembrance was written before him, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that plain and steadying at nine in the evening.

Go and look at one thing. Enter it nowhere. Then stop.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Ledger I keep on myself, I am closing you tonight, and refusing to keep score is not letting myself off. Malachi 3:16 says a book of remembrance was written before him, so by the Holy Spirit I put the keeping down in the name of Jesus.
  2. Balance that has never once had a credit column, you were never a set of accounts. The written word records the small faithful things rather than the failures, and by the Holy Spirit I am finished paying into an account that cannot be settled.
  3. Lord, You are the one who hearkened and heard and wrote it down. Your word keeps a book of remembrance, so by Your Spirit I look at one thing tonight, and I enter it nowhere, and I stop.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on

Malachi 3:16
