I Cannot See Where To Start1 Samuel 16:7

I Keep Cleaning The Part That Shows

This message is for the reader who circles the visible edge of the house month after month and has never once begun on the part that is actually the problem

Let us be precise about what has actually been happening, because precision is kind and vagueness is not.

The hallway is fine. The front room is fine, or fine enough. The half of the kitchen a person can see from the doorway is fine.

And you have done that. That took work. Somebody has been maintaining a front for a long time and that somebody is you, and it costs, and nobody has ever once thanked you for it because the whole point of it is that nobody notices.

Meanwhile the back bedroom has not been touched since spring. And you know that. You have known it every day while polishing the part that shows.

Now here is what I do not want to do. I do not want to stand here and tell you that keeping the front nice is vanity, because that would be a cheap thing to say to a woman who has been holding a door together with both hands. That front is not vanity. That front is a shield, and you built it because you needed one.

But a shield gets heavy, and I think it has started to cost you more than it protects.

Man looketh on the outward appearance

There is a line in Samuel that people quote at each other constantly and almost never sit inside.

For the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart. (1 Samuel 16:7, King James Version)

It gets used as a rebuke. It is not a rebuke. It is a relief.

Read the situation it comes out of. Samuel is looking at a line of sons, picking by height and bearing, doing exactly what any sensible person does, and God stops him and says the criteria are different from what he assumed.

You are not being assessed from the doorway, and the visible half of this house has never once been the half He was reading. 1 Samuel 16:7 moves the looking off the outward appearance entirely, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that land as rest in somebody who has been performing for years.

The one being chosen is the one who was not brought in from the field. Nobody thought to fetch him. He was outside the presentation entirely.

That is where God was looking. Not at the line up. At the part of the house nobody had prepared.

You are not being watched from the doorway, and 1 Samuel 16:7 has never once put God among the people judging by the front. It is written that the Lord looks on the heart, which means the visible half of your house has never been the half He was reading, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that land as rest and not as a warning.

You have been maintaining a front for an audience that God was never sitting in. The word draws the line between the outward appearance and the heart, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets a person put down a shield without feeling careless.

The front is where the energy goes, and the back is where you live

Now the practical piece, because there is a real mechanism here and it is not a fault in you.

The visible part gets done because it has a deadline attached. Somebody might come. That deadline is what gets a tired person moving, and it works, and it is why the hallway is fine.

The back bedroom has no deadline. Nobody is coming to see it. So it never gets the small pressure that makes anything happen, and it slides, and the sliding is quiet.

That is not hypocrisy. It is a person responding to the only pressure available to them. But it means the rooms you actually live in are the ones getting nothing, and the rooms you pass through get everything.

You were never being false, and what happened is that all the pressure in this house has been pointing at the parts other people see. 1 Samuel 16:7 moves the looking off the appearance entirely, and the Spirit of God is the one who gives a person a reason to work where nobody is watching.

So tonight we point it the other way. On purpose. Once.

You are permitted to do something tonight that no visitor will ever benefit from, and its being unseen has never once made it smaller. It is written that the Lord looks on the heart, which puts the hidden work exactly where His attention already is, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present in a room with the door shut.

One surface, where nobody looks

So here is the whole thing.

Go to the part of the house that nobody sees. The back bedroom. The corner behind the door. The side of the kitchen a visitor never gets to.

Clear one surface the size of a tea tray there. Take what is on it off it, put it anywhere in that room, do not sort a thing.

Then stop.

Nobody will notice. That is the point tonight. The whole exercise is one small piece of work done entirely outside the audience.

You are able to do something real tonight that gets no credit at all, and the absence of credit has never once reduced it. 1 Samuel 16:7 puts God's attention on what is not on display, and the Spirit of God is present in a cleared shelf in a room with the door closed.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out tonight over somebody who has been holding a front together.

You are not a fraud, and months of keeping the visible half presentable has never once been evidence of dishonesty in you. I am not promising you a finished house and I am not promising you that the shield comes down easily. 1 Samuel 16:7 relocates God's looking and never once accuses the person who was working on the outside, and it is the Holy Spirit, not my saying so, who takes that and stands it between you and the voice that has been calling you two faced in your own home.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have somewhere to work tonight where no audience exists at all, and unwatched work has never once counted for less in heaven than the kind people see. The written word puts the Lord's looking on the heart, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that true in a back bedroom at nine in the evening with the door shut.

Clear the tray where nobody looks. Then stop.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Front of the house I keep polished, I am not working on you tonight, and going somewhere nobody looks is not a waste. 1 Samuel 16:7 says the Lord looks on the heart and not the outward appearance, so by the Holy Spirit I clear a surface where no visitor goes in the name of Jesus.
  2. Audience I have been performing for, you were never in that verse. The written word moves the looking off the front entirely, and by the Holy Spirit I am finished spending everything I have on the half of this house I pass through.
  3. Lord, You are the one who sent for the son nobody thought to bring in. Your word says You see what man does not see, so by Your Spirit I work tonight in a room with the door shut, and I stop, and I let that count.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
