Here is a small thing I noticed once and have never stopped seeing since.
When you go in to do that room, you go to the middle of it.
Not the door. Not the wall. The middle, where the pile is deepest and the floor is furthest away, and you crouch down there and pick something up and hold it, and then you look up and you are surrounded on all sides by the identical problem in every direction.
And within about six minutes you are out again.
I do not think that is random and I do not think it is a fault. I think you go to the middle because the middle is the worst of it, and the worst of it is what you are actually upset about. Going there is honest. It is where the trouble is.
But it is the one spot in that room with no edge anywhere near it. And a person working with no edge has nothing to measure against, nothing to work outward from, and no way to see that anything has happened.
You could clear a tray sized square in the middle of that floor and it would vanish. Not because it did not happen. Because there is nothing beside it to show against.
Over against his own house
There is a chapter in Nehemiah that most people skip, and it is a list of names, and it is one of the most practical passages in the Bible.
After him repaired Benjamin and Hashub over against their house. After him repaired Azariah the son of Maaseiah the son of Ananiah by his house. (Nehemiah 3:23, King James Version)
The whole chapter is like that. Over against his house. By his house. Over against his chamber.
They rebuilt an entire city wall, and the method was that every family worked on the piece directly in front of where they lived. Nobody was assigned the middle. Nobody stood in the center of the ruin wondering where to begin. Each of them started at the edge nearest to them, and the edges met.
That is not a spiritual metaphor I am importing. That is the actual construction method recorded in the text, and it is the reason a wall that had been rubble for over a century went up in fifty two days.
You are not incapable of this work, and Nehemiah 3 has never once shown a builder standing in the middle of the ruin looking for a place to start. It is written that every one repaired over against his own house, which makes proximity the method rather than importance, and the Holy Spirit is the one who puts that in the hands of somebody working alone at night.
You have been standing where nobody in that chapter ever stood. The word gives every builder the piece nearest to them and no other, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes a small near piece feel like a real assignment.
An edge is what makes work visible
Now the practical half, and it is almost mechanical.
An edge does two things. It gives the work a boundary, so there is a moment where a person can stop. And it gives the work a witness, because a cleared edge sits next to an uncleared one and the difference can be seen.
The middle of a room has neither. There is no boundary, so there is no stopping point, so the job runs until you collapse. And there is nothing to see afterward, so the collapse buys nothing.
That is the whole mechanism of the six minutes. It was never about your stamina, and the state of that room is a record of what a season cost rather than a verdict on the person standing in it.
You were never quitting early, and what happened is that you were working in the one part of the room where finishing is not possible. Nehemiah 3:23 has every builder anchored to a wall he can touch from his own doorway, and the Spirit of God is the one who gives a task a boundary a person can actually reach.
So tonight we go to the edge. The wall side. The bit by the door. The end of the counter. Anywhere with a straight line already in it.
You are allowed to begin at the least important edge of that room, and its unimportance has never once meant the work did not count. It is written that the repairing happened over against each man's own house, which means the nearest piece was the right piece, and the Holy Spirit is the one who removes the guilt from starting somewhere easy.
One edge, tray sized
So here is the whole of it.
Go into that room and do not walk to the middle. Stop at the edge. The nearest wall, the nearest corner, the end of a surface.
Clear a tray sized piece of it. Take what is on it off it, put it anywhere in the room, do not sort a thing.
Then stop.
You will be able to see it. That is the point. A cleared edge shows, because the uncleared part is right beside it doing the showing for you.
You are able to finish a piece tonight, and finishing has never once required the piece to be in the hardest part of the room. Nehemiah 3:23 records builders working the wall in front of their own doors, and the Spirit of God is present in one cleared foot of counter beside a full one.
So here is what I believe is going out tonight over somebody who keeps walking into the middle of a room.
You are not weak at this, and six minutes in the center of a bad room has never once been a measurement of what you can do. I am not promising you a finished room and I am not promising the middle gets easy. Nehemiah 3 corrects a starting position and never once corrects a builder, and it is the Holy Spirit, not my saying so, who takes that and stands it between you and the voice that has been calling you someone who gives up.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You have an edge in that room tonight that is close enough to touch from the doorway, and starting there has never once been a lesser kind of building. The written word has every family repairing the piece over against their own house, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that plain and practical at nine in the evening.
Go to the edge. Clear the tray. Then stop.
Declare this over yourself
- Middle of the room I keep walking into, I am not starting in you tonight, and beginning at the edge is not a smaller effort. Nehemiah 3:23 has every builder repair over against his own house, so by the Holy Spirit I start at the nearest edge in the name of Jesus.
- Voice that calls six minutes a failure, you are not in this text. The written word assigns the nearest piece and never once the hardest one, and by the Holy Spirit I am finished working where finishing was never possible.
- Lord, You are the one who put a whole city wall up by families and doorways. Your word records each of them repairing the piece in front of their own house, so by Your Spirit I clear one edge tonight, and I stop, and I let it stand.
