When Somebody KnocksPsalm 118:5

Six Inches Of Open Door

This message is for the reader who answers through a gap and has been holding every conversation of their life in a doorway with their body in the way

There is a particular way a person opens a door when the house is bad, and you know it from the inside.

The foot goes behind it. The body fills the gap. The hand stays on the edge. And the whole conversation happens in about six inches of daylight, with you leaning slightly forward so that the person on the step is looking at your face and not past your shoulder.

You have got very good at it. You do it without deciding.

And here is what it has cost, and it is not what people would guess.

It is not that people cannot come in. It is that every conversation you have at your own front door happens in a defensive posture. You are managing a sight line while somebody talks to you. Half of you is doing arithmetic about angles instead of listening.

So a neighbor, a friend, a delivery, a child from the street: every one of those is now slightly harder than it should be, and every one takes a little more out of you than it takes out of anybody else.

He set me in a large place

There is a verse in the Psalms that is about space.

I called upon the LORD in distress: the LORD answered me, and set me in a large place. (Psalm 118:5, King James Version)

Set me in a large place.

Not fixed everything. Not removed the distress. Gave him room.

And that is a specific kind of answer that people rarely notice when they read the Psalms quickly. Sometimes the help that arrives is not a solution at all. It is more space to stand in while the situation continues.

Your six inches is a small place. Not because you are small, but because a person defending a sight line has to stand in exactly one spot and cannot move out of it, and that is the definition of a narrow place.

You are not being asked to fix your house in order to have more room to stand in, and Psalm 118:5 has never once required the distress to end first. It is written that the answer was a large place rather than an ended trouble, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes room for a person in the middle of a situation that has not changed.

You have been living in six inches, and the six inches has never once been a measure of what you are worth. The word puts the answer in the giving of space, and the Spirit of God is the one who widens a place a person has been standing in for years.

The gap is a route problem, not a house problem

Now here is the practical thing, and it is more mechanical than you would expect.

You stand in the gap because of what is behind you. Specifically, because of what is visible from the step, which is usually a very small amount of your house. The hall. Whatever is on the stairs. The one corner of a room that shows through a doorway.

That is the whole exposure. It is not your house. It is a sight line about eight feet long, and what shows in it is a record of what a hard stretch cost and never once a verdict on the person standing in the door.

You are defending a strip of floor and not a home, and no doorway has ever once shown more of a house than a doorway can hold. Psalm 118:5 answers a call with room rather than with an ended trouble, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an enormous fear a measurable one.

And a sight line can be dealt with in fifteen minutes, whereas a house cannot.

Once that eight feet is clear, you can stand back when you open the door. Your foot comes out from behind it. Your shoulders come down. And you get to have an ordinary conversation on your own doorstep for the first time in years, with somebody who has no idea that anything has changed.

You were never defending a house, and what you have been defending has never once been more than about eight feet of it. Psalm 118:5 gives room rather than resolution, and the Spirit of God is the one who turns an enormous problem back into a measurable one.

So tonight is a sight line, and it is fifteen minutes.

You are permitted to clear only what shows from the step, and clearing only that has never once been dishonest. It is written that the large place was the answer to the call, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present in eight feet of cleared floor.

Clear what shows from the step

So here is the whole of it, and it has a trick in it that makes it easier.

Go outside. Stand on your own step and open the door and look in, the way somebody else would.

Note what shows. Usually it is much less than you think, because a doorway is a narrow frame and most of the house is not in it.

Then clear only that. The path from the door to the first chair, and whatever is in the visible line.

Fifteen minutes, then stop.

You are able to clear a sight line tonight, and a sight line has never once been the same job as a house. Psalm 118:5 answers with room, and the Spirit of God is present in eight feet of hallway on an ordinary evening.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out tonight over somebody who has been holding a door with their foot.

You are not somebody who shuts people out, and four years of standing in a gap has never once been a fact about your warmth. I am not promising you an open house and I am not promising you a room anybody could walk into. Psalm 118:5 answers a call with a large place rather than with an ended trouble, and it is the Holy Spirit, not my saying so, who takes that and stands it between you and the voice that has been calling you cold in your own doorway.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have about eight feet to deal with tonight, and it has never once been the whole house you have been defending in your head. The written word says the Lord set me in a large place, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that plain and measurable on a doorstep at nine in the evening.

Go outside. Look in. Clear what shows. Then stop.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Six inches of open door, I am clearing a way behind you tonight, and standing back is not letting everybody in. Psalm 118:5 says the Lord set me in a large place, so by the Holy Spirit I widen where I stand in the name of Jesus.
  2. Sight line I have defended for four years, you were never the whole house. The written word answers a call with room rather than with a solved situation, and by the Holy Spirit I am finished having conversations from inside a gap.
  3. Lord, You are the one who answers with a large place. Your word gives room in the middle of a distress that has not ended, so by Your Spirit I clear eight feet tonight, and I stop at fifteen minutes, and I let that stand.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
