When Somebody KnocksLuke 10:42

What A Cleared Path Actually Costs

This message is for the reader who believes preparing for a visitor means preparing the house, and has never considered that one walkable route is the entire job

I want to do something unusual for this article, which is to price the job.

Not to encourage you. To measure it, honestly, the way somebody would measure it if they were quoting for it and had no interest in whether you felt good afterward.

Here is what you have been carrying. Somebody might come, and if they come the house has to be ready, and the house being ready is a weekend of work you do not have and will not have.

That is the quote you have been working from. A weekend. Maybe two.

Now here is the actual job, and I want you to check my numbers.

Somebody arrives. They come through the front door. They walk to a chair. They sit in it. They are given a drink. They leave from the same door.

The floor they touch is the hall and about four feet of one room. The things they see are whatever is in the sight line of that walk. The place they sit is one chair.

Everything else in your house is not part of the job. Not because we are hiding it. Because it is not in the job.

One thing is needful

There is a scene in Luke where a woman is doing a great deal of work and is told, kindly, that most of it was not required.

But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her. (Luke 10:42, King James Version)

One thing is needful.

Now this passage gets used against busy women constantly and that is not what I am doing with it. Martha's work was real work and somebody had to do it and the meal did not cook itself.

But look at the actual correction. It is not that her work was bad. It is that she was carrying much serving as though all of it were required, and He says one thing is needful, which is a statement about scale.

He is not asking her to do more. He is telling her that less was needed than she believed, and that the belief itself was what was making her anxious.

You are not lazy for wanting the job to be smaller, and Luke 10:42 has never once treated a reduced requirement as a lower standard. It is written that one thing is needful, which corrects a scale rather than an effort, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells a person the true size of a thing.

You have been quoting yourself for a weekend on a job that is fifteen minutes wide. The word says the needful thing was one and not many, and the Spirit of God is the one who resizes a task that has grown in the dark.

Fifteen minutes, measured properly

Now let me actually measure it, because I said I would.

The hall. Whatever is on the floor between the front door and the chair. On the floor, not near it, not around it. Usually this is between four and nine objects.

The chair itself. Clearing a chair takes about ninety seconds.

Whatever is in direct sight from that walk. A shelf. The bottom of the stairs. One end of a table.

That is the job. In most houses it is between eleven and twenty minutes of work, and the reason it feels like a weekend is that you have never once separated it from the rest of the house in your mind. It has been quoted as part of a bigger job that includes rooms nobody will enter.

You were never facing a weekend, and there has never once been a version of this where the whole house was in the job. Luke 10:42 corrects a scale without lowering a standard, and the Spirit of God is the one who separates what is actually required from what has been assumed.

And here is the part people push back on. What about the rest? What if they need the bathroom? Then they use the bathroom, and the bathroom is a fourth item on the list, and it is still not a weekend.

You are permitted to prepare only what is in the job, and preparing only that has never once been a deception. It is written that one thing is needful and the rest was much serving, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gives a person permission to stop at the edge of what was actually asked.

Clear the path to the first chair

So here is the whole of it, and it is now a measured task rather than a feeling.

Front door to the first chair. Move what is on the floor of that path.

Clear the chair.

Fifteen minutes on a timer, and when the timer goes, stop, finished or not.

You are able to complete a measured job tonight, and it has never once needed to be larger to be a real preparation. Luke 10:42 puts the needful thing at one, and the Spirit of God is present in a hall and a chair and nothing else.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out tonight over somebody who has been quoting themselves for a weekend.

You are not avoiding work, and four years of refusing a job you had measured wrongly has never once been a fact about your willingness. I am not promising you visitors and I am not promising you a clean house. Luke 10:42 corrects a scale and never once accuses the one who was carrying too much, and it is the Holy Spirit, not my saying so, who takes that and stands it between you and the voice that has been calling you somebody who cannot be bothered.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have a fifteen minute job in front of you tonight, and it has never once been the weekend you have been declining for years. The written word says one thing is needful, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that measurable and plain at nine in the evening with a timer running.

Set the timer. Clear the route. Then stop.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Job I priced at a whole weekend, I am measuring you honestly tonight, and fifteen minutes is not a shortcut. Luke 10:42 says one thing is needful, so by the Holy Spirit I clear the path and the chair in the name of Jesus.
  2. Quote I gave myself four years ago, you are not in this text. The written word corrects a scale and never once accuses the one who was carrying too much, and by the Holy Spirit I am finished refusing a weekend that was always nine minutes.
  3. Lord, You are the one who told a busy woman that less was needed than she believed. Your word says one thing is needful, so by Your Spirit I set a timer tonight, and I clear one route, and when it goes I stop.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
