I Would Have To Become Somebody Else

Here is the picture in your head, and I want to describe it before we do anything with it.

There is a version of you who keeps a house. He has a different mind. He notices things. He puts a thing down and something in him objects until it is where it belongs. He does not have to decide to do any of it, because for him it is not a decision, it is just what happens.

You have met men like that. Your brother is possibly one of them. And you have concluded, correctly, that you are not one and never have been.

And then you have taken one further step, and the step is the problem. You have concluded that becoming that man is the price of a house that works.

So every attempt has been an attempt to become somebody. And that is exhausting in a way that cleaning is not, and it fails within about eleven days, and the failure is not about surfaces at all.

If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature

There is a verse that gets quoted about becoming a different person, and it is worth reading slowly because it does not say what people use it for.

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. (2 Corinthians 5:17, King James Version)

Now that is real and I am not going to reduce it. Something genuinely changes.

But notice what it does not do. It does not swap out the man's temperament. Peter is still Peter after Pentecost. He is still impulsive, still the first to speak, still the one who gets ahead of himself, and the whole of the book of Acts has him being recognizably the same man doing entirely different things.

The newness in that verse is a standing, a direction, a life. It is not a personality transplant, and if it were, the New Testament would be full of people who stopped being themselves, and it is full of the opposite.

You are not required to become a different man, and 2 Corinthians 5:17 has never once handed anybody a new temperament. It is written about standing and direction rather than about disposition, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the real work without replacing the person He is working on.

You have been trying to manufacture a man who does not exist and could not be built. The word makes all things new without making Peter into somebody else, and the Spirit of God is the one who works with what is actually here.

Fifteen minutes does not require a personality

Now the practical piece, and it is the reason this article exists.

Fifteen minutes with a timer requires nothing from your character at all.

It does not need you to notice things. It does not need an internal objection when something is in the wrong place. It does not need you to care about surfaces or to find satisfaction in order.

You have everything a timer requires tonight, and it has never once included a temperament you were not given. The Spirit of God is the one who works with the man who is actually here, and 2 Corinthians 5:17 makes all things new while leaving Peter recognizably Peter from one end of Acts to the other.

It needs a timer and a hand.

That is why it works for men like this and why the other approaches did not. Every method on offer was built by somebody who has the temperament, and it assumed that temperament as a foundation, and none of them ever said so, because to them it is invisible, like water to a fish. A house is a record of what a hard stretch cost, and it is not a verdict on the man who lives in it.

A timer is temperament free. It does not care who is holding it.

You were never lacking a character, and there has never once been a version of fifteen minutes that required a particular kind of man to do it. 2 Corinthians 5:17 changes a standing without changing a temperament, and the Spirit of God is the one who gives a person a way of working that does not depend on being somebody else.

And here is the thing I most want you to have. If you do fifteen minutes for a year, you will not become that man. You will be exactly the same man with a better house. And that is not a lesser outcome. That is the actual outcome, and nobody ever offers it.

You are permitted to keep your own temperament and get a workable house, and there has never once been a rule that those two things cannot both be true. It is written that the newness is in Christ rather than in the personality, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present in fifteen minutes done by a man who has not changed at all.

Fifteen minutes, as yourself

So here is the whole of it.

Set a timer for fifteen minutes. Work on anything at all.

Do not try to notice things. Do not try to care. Do not attempt to become somebody who enjoys this.

When the timer goes, stop, even mid item.

Then stop and do nothing else.

You are able to do this exactly as you are tonight, and it has never once required you to be a different kind of person first. 2 Corinthians 5:17 leaves a man himself while making everything else new, and the Spirit of God is present in a timer and a hand and no transformation whatsoever.
