Keeping It Not Doing ItDeuteronomy 6:7

It Is Not Discipline It Is A Decision

This message is for the reader who thinks keeping is a character trait they were born without, and who needs it put back to them as a decision made many small times

You think discipline is a substance.

That is the whole of it, and I do not think anybody has ever put it to you plainly. You believe there is a thing called discipline, and that some people have a supply of it, and that people with the supply keep houses and people without it do not, and that you were not issued any.

And that belief is doing a great deal of harm, because if discipline is a substance and you do not have it, there is nothing to be done. You cannot manufacture a substance. So the only options are to acquire it somehow, which nobody has ever explained how to do, or to accept that you are one of the people without it.

I want to take that apart, because I have known a great many disciplined people and none of them has a supply of anything.

When thou sittest in thine house

There is a passage in Deuteronomy about how a thing gets into a life.

And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. (Deuteronomy 6:7, King James Version)

Look at the structure of that.

It is not a command to be devoted. It is not a command to acquire a quality. It is four ordinary moments listed out: sitting, walking, lying down, getting up.

Something enormous is meant to get into a whole nation, and the method given is repetition inside ordinary moments. Not intensity. Not a quality of character. Occasions, listed, plural.

And what that tells you is how anything at all gets into a life. Not by acquiring a trait. By being decided, again, in an ordinary moment, many times.

You are not missing a substance, and Deuteronomy 6:7 has never once described a thing entering a life by way of a character quality. It is written as four ordinary repeated moments, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that available to somebody who has been waiting to become disciplined.

You have been trying to acquire a trait that Scripture does not describe as existing. The word gives repetition inside ordinary occasions as the method, and the Spirit of God is the one who is in a moment rather than in a personality.

What disciplined people actually have

Now let me tell you what I have observed, because it is different from what people assume.

The people who keep houses are not experiencing anything different. They do not want to do it either. Ask any of them honestly and they will tell you so.

What they have is not a feeling and it is not a supply. It is that they made a decision once and then remade it, in a moment, on a lot of ordinary evenings, and after enough repetitions the remaking got faster until it stopped feeling like a decision at all.

You are one decision away from the thing you thought was a substance, and no supply of anything has ever once separated the people who keep a house from the people who do not. Deuteronomy 6:7 puts the whole method in repeated ordinary moments, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present in the first of them.

But it is still a decision. It never stopped being one. It just got quick.

Which means the gap between you and them is not a substance you lack. It is a number of repetitions, and repetitions are available to anybody who is alive tonight.

You were never a person without discipline, and there has never once been a supply of anything separating the people who keep a house from the people who do not. Deuteronomy 6:7 puts the method in repeated ordinary moments, and the Spirit of God is the one who is present in the first of them.

And this is why the fifteen minutes matters so much more than it looks. It is not fifteen minutes of cleaning. It is one repetition of a decision, and the decision is the thing being built, and the room is a side effect.

You are permitted to make one decision tonight and nothing more, and one decision has never once had to feel like a transformation. It is written that the thing goes in through sitting, walking, lying down and rising up, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present in a single ordinary evening.

Fifteen minutes, and name it as a decision

So here is the whole of it, and there is a naming step tonight.

Before you start, say out loud: this is a decision, not a trait.

Then set a timer for fifteen minutes and work on anything. When it goes, stop.

The naming is not a slogan. It is there because at some point in those fifteen minutes the old story will arrive, the one about not having what other people have, and the sentence gives you something to answer it with.

Then stop and do nothing else.

You are making one decision tonight, and it has never once needed to be more than one to be the thing that this is made of. Deuteronomy 6:7 puts the whole method in repeated ordinary moments, and the Spirit of God is present in the first repetition as much as in the fortieth.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out tonight over somebody who thinks they were not issued something.

You are not missing a quality other people were given, and thirty years of believing that has never once made it true. I am not promising you that it starts feeling natural and I am not promising you a clean house. Deuteronomy 6:7 puts the whole method in ordinary repeated moments and never once in a trait, and it is the Holy Spirit, not my saying so, who takes that and stands it between you and the voice that has been telling you since you were nine that you do not have it in you.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have a decision available tonight, and it has never once required a supply of anything to make. The written word puts the thing into a life through sitting and walking and lying down and rising up, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that plain in a kitchen at nine in the evening.

Say it is a decision. Fifteen minutes. Then stop.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Trait I thought I was born without, I am making one decision tonight, and one decision is all this has ever been. Deuteronomy 6:7 puts the whole method in sitting and walking and lying down and rising up, so by the Holy Spirit I decide once in the name of Jesus.
  2. Sentence said over me when I was nine, you are not in this text. The written word describes repetition inside ordinary moments and never once a quality some people are issued, and by the Holy Spirit I am finished waiting to become a disciplined person.
  3. Father, You are the one who put an enormous thing into a nation through four ordinary moments. Your word says when thou sittest in thine house, so by Your Spirit I make one decision tonight, and I do fifteen minutes, and I stop.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
