Keeping It Not Doing ItGalatians 6:2

There Are Five Of Us In This House

This message is for the reader whose keeping is undone every night by the other people who live there, and who is carrying a whole household alone

There are five of you.

And you do fifteen minutes, and it is real work, and by eleven the next morning the room is exactly as it was, because four other people live here and every one of them puts things down.

That is not laziness on their part, mostly. That is what living somewhere is. But it means that in this house, unlike in the house of somebody who lives alone, the work does not accumulate. It gets consumed.

And you have been doing your fifteen minutes against the daily output of five people, and calling the result a failure, and drawing conclusions about yourself from arithmetic that was never survivable.

I want to be careful here because I am not going to turn this into an article about your family. That is not what this site is for and it would not help you. But I am going to be honest about the numbers, because I think nobody has been.

Bear ye one another's burdens

There is a verse in Galatians that people quote at the person already carrying everything.

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. (Galatians 6:2, King James Version)

One another's.

Now that is a two way word and it almost never gets read that way. It gets read at whoever is already lifting, as an instruction to lift more.

But one another is mutual by construction. It cannot be done by one person. A household in which one member bears everybody's burdens is not fulfilling that verse; it is a household where the verse is being performed by one person and received by four.

You have been performing a mutual command alone, and no verse written in the plural has ever once been addressed to one person in a household. Galatians 6:2 says bear ye one another's burdens, and the Spirit of God is the one who gives that verse back to the person it has been used against.

And two verses later, in the same passage, it says every man shall bear his own burden. Both are in there. The mutual carrying and the individual load, in one chapter, four verses apart.

So Scripture is not asking you to carry a house on your own. It is describing something shared, and something individual, and neither of those is a woman doing fifteen minutes against the output of five.

You are not failing to keep this house, and Galatians 6:2 has never once put a whole household on one person. It is written as one another's, which is mutual by construction, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gives that verse back to the person it has been used against.

You have been fulfilling that law alone in a house where it was written for everybody. The word puts a shared carrying beside an individual load, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with somebody doing five people's work.

Your fifteen minutes is your fifteen minutes

Now the practical thing, and it is the whole of tonight.

Your fifteen minutes is not the household's cleaning. It is yours.

That distinction is everything, because at the moment your fifteen minutes is being measured against the state of a room that four other people are also acting on. Under that measurement, nothing you ever do will look like anything, and you will conclude, night after night, that it is pointless.

So we change what the fifteen minutes is for. It is not for the room. It is for you, and for the part of the house that is genuinely yours to hold, and it gets counted when it is done rather than in the morning.

That is not giving up on the household. Whatever needs to happen with the other four is a real conversation and it may need to be had, and it will be a better conversation if you are not exhausted and convinced you are failing when you have it.

You were never losing ground, and there has never once been a version of that arithmetic where fifteen minutes could hold five people's output. Galatians 6:2 puts the carrying in the plural, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets a person count their own share as their own share.

You are permitted to do your part and let it be your part, and doing that has never once been abandoning anybody. It is written that every man shall bear his own burden in the same chapter, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present in fifteen minutes counted the moment they are done.

Fifteen minutes, counted tonight

So here is the whole of it.

Set a timer for fifteen minutes. Work on anything.

When it goes, stop. And here is the part that is new: before you go to bed, look at what you did and count it. Tonight, while it still exists.

Do not look at it in the morning. By then it will have been consumed, and the wrong conclusion gets drawn from that, as it has every morning for years.

Then stop and do nothing else.

You are able to count your own work tonight, and counting it has never once required it to survive until breakfast. Galatians 6:2 puts the burden bearing in the plural, and the Spirit of God is present in fifteen minutes counted before the house wakes up.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out tonight over somebody carrying a household.

You are not failing at this, and fifteen minutes measured against the daily output of five people has never once been an arithmetic anybody could win. I am not promising you help from the household and I am not promising you a clean house. Galatians 6:2 puts the burden bearing in the plural and sets an individual load beside it, and it is the Holy Spirit, not my saying so, who takes that and stands it between you and the voice that has been telling you every morning that nothing you do matters.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have your own share tonight and it has never once been the whole house, and no verse anywhere has ever asked one person to bear five people's burdens. The written word says bear ye one another's burdens, which cannot be done by one, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that plain at half past nine in a kitchen.

Fifteen minutes. Count it tonight. Then stop.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Household I have been carrying by myself, I am doing my fifteen minutes tonight, and mine has never once had to cover everybody. Galatians 6:2 says bear ye one another's burdens, which cannot be done by one, so by the Holy Spirit I do my share in the name of Jesus.
  2. Morning that undoes my evening, you were never the measurement. The written word puts the carrying in the plural and sets an individual load beside it, and by the Holy Spirit I am finished judging my work by what is left of it at eleven the next day.
  3. Father, You are the one who wrote one another's and meant it. Your word says every man shall bear his own burden in the same chapter, so by Your Spirit I do fifteen minutes tonight, and I count it before bed, and I stop.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
